“Orbit recovery problems for compact groups”
Abstract: In this talk we consider a class of problems in which the goal is to recover a signal that has been corrupted both by noise and by the random action of a compact group. Such problems are found in signal processing, structural biology, and computer vision, among other applications. In such a situation, the best one can hope for is to recover the orbit of the signal under the group action. We ask for the sample complexity of this task: how many observations of the signal do we need to make before we can accurately estimate its orbit? We show that the sample complexity is controlled by algebraic criteria regarding the polynomial functions that are invariant under the group action, and we give computational tests for these criteria. This is joint work with Afonso Bandeira, Joe Kileel, Jonathan Niles-Weed, Amelia Perry, and Alexander Wein.
Biography: Ben Blum-Smith is Mathematician-in-Residence at the Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics, Part-Time Faculty at The New School, and a Visiting Academic at the NYU Center for Data Science (CDS). He received his PhD from the NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 2017. His research is in invariant theory and commutative algebra, as well as their applications to data science. He is a founding organizer of the Math and Democracy Seminar at the CDS.
