“Gromov-like distances between spheres”
Abstract: Distances between metric spaces such as the Gromov-Hausdorff distance and its Optimal Transport variant, the Gromov-Wasserstein distance, are nowadays often invoked in applications related to data classification. Interestingly, the precise value of these distances on pairs of canonical shapes is known only in very limited cases. In this talk, I will describe lower bounds for the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between spheres (endowed with their geodesic distances) which we prove to be tight in some cases via the construction of (a posteriori) optimal correspondences. These lower bounds arise from a certain version of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem which is applicable to discontinuous functions.
Biography: Facundo Mémoli is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Ohio State University.
He was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, a small country in Latin America, where he obtained an Electrical Engineering and MMS degrees from the Universidad de la República in 2000 and 2001. Facundo’s research interests include topics in the intersection of metric geometry, topology, probability, and applications to science and engineering such as topological data analysis, and networks.
Facundo lead the Network Data Analysis group. He is a member of the OSU TGDA group. He is currently the PI on three NSF grants.
